Rayner's Cassio, also victimised in the dreadful tangle woven by Iago, is movingly played. But equally important, she is a picture of innocent radiance in her love for her husband, and her gradual realization of the pit into which she is about to be cast is deeply poignant. There is hatefulness about him from hia initial appearance, and the scene in which, while protesting his honesty and love for Othello, he injects the venom of suspicion into Othello's mind, is expertly played. He is thoroughly immersed in the role, investing it with detestable cynicism, guile and malevolence. Ryan's Iago is a creation of pure villainy. Restrained and soft in speech up to this moment, he has deep strength and force as he is propelled along in his wrath and grief over Desdemona's imputed infidelity. His disintegration into a man in whom Iago has unloosed the furies is well‐prepared and pitiful to behold. And there is a sublime joy in him as he treasures the great prize he has won. Jones succeeds in giving it credibility throughout He is genuinely moving in his deep affection for the wife he has taken. It has been difficult to believe that this valiant general could so easily fall into the trap set by Iago. And, again under the direction of Gladys Vaughan, this tragedy of jealousy and evil pulsates with the grim events it unfolds. Betty Henritze has taken over the part of the faithful Emilia. Among the principals, James Earl Jones, in the title role, is back, as are James Antonio as the weak and silly Roderigo, Mitchell Ryan as the perfidious Iago, John Rayner as the gallant Cassio and Julienne Marie as the lovely, benighted Desdemona.
